Letter from Michael Stuart: Population loss

Letter from Michael Stuart

population loss

I read and reread Nancy’s letter last week. Otsego County has a long history of moving from district to district. Sometimes we are divided from west to east, and sometimes our whole county swings from west to east.

Now we are split in two from north to south. It is not the fault of the candidates for the office of Congress. It’s the fault of sheer population loss.

New York is hemorrhaging at an alarming rate. The blame falls squarely on our New York State executive and legislative branches. Tax and spending policies and unfunded mandates crafted by the legislature and approved by our governor are driving this state into bankruptcy and the people who are leaving don’t want to be held accountable for the debt.

The exodus is compounded by Albany’s decades-long parody of political corruption and scandal. Until the Great Empire State gets back on track, upstate districts will continue to be hacked until there is only one big red spot above many blue dots from the bottom of the state.

So, Nancy, I ask that you please educate yourself on all of our legislative and gubernatorial candidates from all parties running for office in November and vote for the people you trust to stop the loss. population, lower taxes, support existing employers, and welcome new businesses and industries – this is the only way to solve your redistricting problem.
